20 other sites like Craigslist to promote & find stuff!!!!!!
Jul 5th, 2007 by Vikram Rajan
If you’re interested in marketing yourself through Craigslist, you may want to check out the audio-book, WEB MARKETING 2.0: Prospect like Craigslist, YouTube, and eBay!
Craigslist has nearly single-handedly destroyed the paid newspaper classifieds world. It’s a great way to promote your products, find employees, sell your garage-sale stuff, and whatever else… it’s also localized for our convenience.
You can use these website to post your real estate listings, sell your garage-sale stuff, promote new job openings, find potential applicants, and even sell your e/audio/books!
But it’s not the only player in town. Mashable has reviewed a whole bunch, and I’ve added to the list with their comments. Just about all of them are free, localized, categorized, and regulate themselves through an honor system. Here they are in approximate order of popularity:
- Google Base (attached to Google Product Search, formerly known as Froogle)
- Kijiji (eBay’s free listings, big internationally, just launched in USA)
- MySpace Classifieds
- Facebook Marketplace (becoming bigger than MySpace, and attracts an older audience)
- Yahoo! Classifieds
- Windows Live Expo (Microsoft)
- Village Voice, powered by Backpage
- OLX.com (big internationally?)
- Lycos classifieds
- Local.com
- PennySaver USA
- Trulia (for real estate only)
- Vast
- vFlyer (auto-posting to Google Base, Craigslist, and sharing widgets)
- Oodle, iqZone, Edgeio (are also multi-classifieds blasters, aggregators, and search engines)
- Verticlans (new)
- MyStore (new & very social sharing “2.0″ oriented)
- Yample.com is also social/2.0
- RealpeopleRealstuff.com (video-based classifieds)
- …AND SO MANY MORE (click to view Google search results for ‘free classifieds’)
But these are the biggest. Now, you just have to post & re-post since most listings expire after a while. BTW: You can compare website traffic through Alexa.com
I’M SURE YOU FOUND THIS USEFUL:

Thanks for the advice, I’ll certainly check them out.
I love mystore.com have been doing business on thier site for awhile now. It seems to be the only site where I can set up my own shop and actually tweak it for my customers and actually get direct feedback from customers. Great to see it is finally getting some traction and PR.
Great post! Interestingly, Oodle (#15) actually powers both Lycos (#9) and Local.com (#10).
Might also want to add Safarri.com to the list
It is free, does user powered stores with custom URLs, is the first ever to do real time Google Earth integration, can do registered or anonymous listings, has clean urls perfect for referencing in newspapers, syndicates ads in and out using Google Base, Oodle, and EdgeIO, uses automatically calculated distance based filtering instead of pathetic “local areas” that are hardly ever near you, and regular listings stay up as long as you need so they don’t have to be re posted all the time
Great info, thanks! I found another one recently, www.listasaurus.com where they actually PAY you to list your ads…interesting new concept! They also do zip code based search, and the site has a really fun feel to it as well. I will check out some of these other sites too!
Thank You so much for being such an awesome resource for advertising for free and posting these web sites.
I totally appreciate you and what you are doing for us marketers.
Have a Great Day!
Great resource - thanks. Does anyone know traffic details on these relative to CraigsList? I’ve had great success on Craigs List and very limited success on the others.
you can use alexa.com to compare traffic on any websites.
Craigslist is one of the best free advertising options for anybody. The exposure that the website creates for your listings is huge. Ive been using a craigslist posting tool http://www.craygo.com to post to the craigslist real estate/housing sections. I thought I’d share the tip with you. With the craigslist tool you can easily post to all top cities, or stay within the top listing of one city.
Thanks for publishing this list!
Thank you! This is a great list and it is exactly what I was looking for to post information about a wonderful opportunity for Electricity Users as well as for Entrepreneurs!
Really great list Vik. I’ve been marketing via classified sites for a while and can vouch that it works when done right.
Two other sites that I use quite often that I didn’t see on your list are http://www.backpage.com and http://www.classifiedads.com Both of which are free to post and bring in really good traffic.
Also for comparing traffic, you should check out www.compete.com and www.quantcast.com as they give some really insight into traffic data. Cheers!
Please consider the new site www.localknown.com as another free ad alternative.
it is really a great post including very good sources thanks

They’ve been expanding pretty quick recently and have a great area to list your weekend events for free.
Thanks for sharing as you know web 2.0 marketing is very effective. Why pay for advertisements when you don’t have too.

Charlotte Howard
I still find that craigslist has been the most productive of all of these sites. BTW microsoft’s expo has ceased to exist.
thanks!!!!!!awsome
CraigsList seem to be loosing ground recently. I think they should add up more avenues that will keep them on top.
As I see video classifieds websites will soon outrank the regular text classifieds sites. That is because people don’t trust in images and text anymore. Instead a video ad will result in higher sales, higher customer satisfaction and loyalty, bigger profit. And that is because potential buyers will see a complete presentation of the product before they decide to buy it. People can be convinced easier with a video ad compared to regular text.
Great list of advertising websites…
